5-nitroindole-2-carboxylic acid ethyl ester is used as a reagent for the synthesis of indole-2-acetone and as a novel indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) inhibitor. 5-nitroindole-2-carboxylic acid ethyl ester is also a useful synthetic intermediate for the synthesis of dihydrophenylpiperazine (BHAP) reverse transcriptase inhibitor delavidin.
